Time:The eighth lunar month.
Place:Mai Chau District, Hoa Binh Province.
Characteristics: The Praying for good fortune Festival of the Thai in Mai Chau. Every family prepares worshipping meal to set table in common shrine follow the principles: this year the offering is chicken, next year the offering is pig. In the afternoon, each family kills two chickens to worship Kitchen God (set in house) and Earth genie (set at field).
Time: The tenth lunar month.
Place: Muong Bi Commune, Tan Lac District, Hoa Binh Province.
Characteristics: Harvest Festival is held after harvesting bumper crop in the 10th lunar month. During the Harvest Festival, the Muong also worship parents, ancestors.
Time: The 16th day of the second lunar month.
Place: Phu Vinh Commune, Tan Lac District, Hoa Binh Province.
Objects of worship: The Stone (the remnants of the religion on all things efficacious that are metamorphosed by the Buddha)
Characteristics: Games of con throwing, spin the top, bow-shooting contest.
Location: In Hoa Binh Province, approximately 135km from Hanoi and 60km from Hoa Binh Town.
Characteristics: From the top of Cun Pass, one can admire the superb panorama of Mai Chau surrounded by a green valley and stilt houses. Many minorities, including the Thai ethnic group, live in Lac Village.
Coming to Lac Village, you will see stilt houses border both sides of the roads. The houses are quite large with palm leaf roofs and polished bamboo-slat floors. The kitchen is located in the center of the house; the cooking as well as the making of the colorful tho cam, the material used by Thai minority to make their clothes, takes place in the kitchen. The windows are large and decorated with patterns. Each house also has a pond to breed fish.
The Sunday market brings a lot of people into town. People from different minorities living in the mountains come to Mai Chau market to sell their specific products: honey, bananas, corn, and tho cam made by skilled Thai women. The Sunday market is also an occasion to enjoy traditional Thai dishes and to participate in traditional dances.
Time: The fourth lunar month.
Place: Tech Lim Ground, My Hoa Commune, Tan Lac District, Hoa Binh Province.
Characteristics: Praying-for-rain ceremony is held at the Tech Lim Ground, the chief of hamlet lays feast tray. Don and Chuong hamlets arrange their troops to perform mock battle and pray the King Water for rain.
Time: The fourth lunar month.
Place: Mai Chau District, Hoa Binh Province.
Characteristics: Praying for rain Festival of the Thai in Mai Chau opens at nights that have the moon's red halo in the third and the fourth lunar months. Everyone sings to pray for rain in every house of the hamlet, then carrying torch procession around the hamlet.
Time: The seventh and the eighth lunar months.
Place: Muong Bi Commune, Tan Lac District, Hoa Binh Province.
Characteristics: Rice leaves washing Festival of the Muong takes place at the seventh, the eighth lunar months which is the time rice trees give seeds. The festival recalls people who reclaimed wasteland and set up Muong Hamlet. The offering tray of feast is put in the fields of families, sorcerers pray for crops with fewer insects.
Time: 8th day of the first lunar month.
Place: Lac Thinh Commune, Yen Thuy District, Hoa Binh Province.
Objects of worship: Au Co, who has the merit of teaching people to sing and shoot.
Characteristics: Offer birds meat, meat of wild beast. Popular opera performance, and mask dance.
